The distance between the eyes relative to face width. Close to one eye-width apart is the classic ideal.
Eye separation ratio measures the gap between the eyes (inner corner to inner corner, or pupil to pupil) relative to overall face width. The classic ideal is that the gap between the eyes equals roughly the width of one eye — this is the basis for the "facial fifths" proportion guideline.
Wide-set eyes (larger gap) can look approachable but, in excess, unbalanced; close-set eyes (smaller gap) can look intense but, in excess, can read as a facial failo. Like most bone-based ratios, it's essentially fixed after growth.

Are wide-set or close-set eyes better?
Neither is universally better; both extremes can become failos, while proportions near the one-eye-width ideal are rated most harmoniously.
